Giurisprudenza, Giustizia, Diritto: un’istantanea dalla Stanza della Segnatura
Abstract
This paper retraces the main stages of critical history around the so-called Jurisprudence wall in the Stanza della Segnatura (Vatican City, Vatican Palace), painted by Raphael. The fresco shows the allegories of Justice and other Virtues an two frames representing the Civil Law – Justinian receiving the Pandects from Trebonius – and the Canon Law – Pope Gregory IX receiving the Decretals from Raymond of Peñafort. The essay also deals with the questions concerning images of Justice in connection to Penal Law, as suggested by iconography of law studies, in the context of the Stanza della Segnatura.
Keywords : Iconography; Stanza della Segnatura; Justice; Jurisprudence; Law, Raphael.
