Abstract
The article shows the results of research carried out by the Superintendency for the Archaeological Heritage in the
countryside near the ancient city of Herdonia (Ordona, FG) in northern Apulia during archaeological excavations for
the realization of a wind farm. The investigations revealed a hypogean structure realized directly in the geological
soil, in which several domestic animal carcasses were recognized. The taphonomical analysis and the composition of
the faunal sample illustrated that the animals were probably sacrificed together with a fragmentary amphora, buried
at the bottom of the pit. This contribution examines the practices of sacrifice in a context of consolidated Romanization
in the Apulia countryside, in the second half of the 1st century B.C.
