88 anni per ricomporre un vaso: le vicende di un cratere fra Irsina, Reggio Calabria e Matera

Angelo Bottini

Abstract

In January 1927, fragments of an important red figure krater were found in the Bradano valley in Irsina (MT) and
subsequently transferred to the Museum of Reggio Calabria. Several decades later, in 1965, a further fragment of the
vase surfaced although it was not identified as such at the time. This fragment, depicting a part of the main scene,
was handed over to the Museum of Matera. Several more decades passed before the connection was made between
the Matera and the Reggio Calabria fragments. In 2015 they were finally reunited and the reassembled vase went on
display in the Museum of Matera. This paper narrates the intriguing history of this vase.
