Dalla polis alla colonia. Segni di trasformazione nel paesaggio agrario dell’ager Thurinus nei secoli della romanizzazione

Abstract


This work aims to examine the archaeological evidence of the Roman age in the ager Thurinus from a landscape point of
view: most of the sites are known only through surveys and surface investigations so it is not always possible to identify
the agricultural production conducted within them. Hence the need to include the Roman settlements within phytoclimatic
bands that can better frame the evidence within a more precise context of specialized crops such as vines and olive trees,
already known from Roman literary sources. Starting from a general picture of the environment of northern Calabria
(soil, climate, vegetation), the stages that led Rome to conquer the region will be retraced, as well as the road and port
infrastructures built during the years of Romanization, the predial toponymy and the literary sources on the economy of
the ager Thurinus, ending up with the placement of Roman villas and settlements within the phytoclimatic
