Gli Enotri in Alta Val d’Agri: testimonianze documentarie e ricerche archeologiche
Abstract
The main archaeological evidence relating to the ethnos of the Oenotrians is located in the Agri - Sinni compartment;
however, in the upper Agri Valley artifacts are sporadic, especially when compared to the extraordinary finds from the
middle sector of the valley and the Sinni valley. This lack of data is attributable to a gap in the excavation evidence:
for these reasons, this paper has set up a multidisciplinary research aimed at delineating settlement patterns during the
Oenotrian and Archaic periods in the upper Agri Valley. A careful examination of the nineteenth and twentieth-century
archival material allowed us to reconstruct the history of the research conducted by local archaeologists and scholars.
The reinterpretation of the archaeological data that emerged from the rescue archaeology of the Provincial Museum
and, later, from the Basilicata Soprintendenza, provided new elements on the Oenotrian presence in this territory, in
the light of a geomorphological analysis of the area.
