Gli Enotri nelle tradizioni grec

Mario Lombardo

Abstract

In the Greek sources the Oenotrians find a space of considerable interest for the antiquity and authority of the traditions
they preserve, which can be read from two different but related perspectives, that of archaic periegetics and that of
‘archaeology’ (in the sense of Thucydides’ archaeologies). The first perspective is a descriptive one and focuses on the
Oenotrian settlements and their geographical location. The other is primarily concerned with the origins of the Oenotrians,
a perspective that is central to Greek traditions about the “other”, where we can trace the cultural paradigms that
governed the perception/representation of the peoples with whom the Greeks came into contact in the Mediterranean
world. These traditions are reviewed here, with some reflections on the first in particular.
