Nuove tecnologie per la documentazione planimetrica e l’analisi topografica dell’area del c.d. Castrum di Metaponto: le indagini 2019-2021
Abstract
In the summer of 2019, the Post Graduated School of Archaeological Heritage of Matera, undertook a new research
project at the area of the c.d. castrum of Metaponto already investigated in the 70s of the last century, when extensive
archaeological excavations were carried out that brought to light a moat, baths, a road junction between platèia and
stenopòs, some burials of the imperial age, rooms of the late imperial age and, about sixty meters from these evidences,
an early christian basilica with baptistery partially superimposed on a hellenistic stoà.
The Matera School resumed investigations with a campaign of surveys, topographical documentation and diagnostics,
in 2019, and a campaign of stratigraphic archaeological excavation in 2021 through essays and surveys conducted at
the baths (sector B) and the basilica complex (sector C).
The work plan articulated into several research phases directed at studying the roman settlement through the use of the
most innovative technologies. In fact, the topographical analysis of the context was carried out with the application
of innovative tools to the planimetric documentation already present and to that elaborated in the most recent survey
campaigns.
Examination of the results obtained from the research made it possible to draw a detailed and more up-to-date picture
of the topographical articulation of the settlement of Metaponto, which introduces a new exegetical season.
