Abstract

The purpose of this research is to investigate certain aspects about the material culture within the fortified inhabitation,
excavated by Università degli Studi dell’Aquila from 2004 to 2009, in the locality named “Castellaccio”, around
Tornimparte (AQ). Thanks to the analysis of new data obtainable from the historical documentation studies and the
archaeological finds from the investigated site, it has been possible to reach the overall reinterpretation of the inhabited
dynamics of the castle. On the one hand, through cartographic and archival documents, it has been possible to
theorize the existence of two different fortifications, Castiglione and S. Angelo, the latter identified as the excavated
site. On the other hand, the study of the archaeological finds has permitted to understand, thanks to the great quantity
of finds discovered during the archaeological excavation campaigns, some aspects linked to the material culture in the
castle, during the chronological period between the 14th and 15th century. Part of the analysed finds can be visited in
the archaeological permanent exhibition of Polo Museale dell’Ateneo Aquilano (PoMAQ), in Dipartimento di Scienze
Umane (DSU) dell’Università degli Studi dell’Aquila.
