Il ponte Ponticello a Benevento: un preliminare studio tecnico-strutturale

Ivan Ferrari

Abstract

The Ponticello bridge is a Roman construction with a single arch of modest dimensions located in the north-eastern
suburbs of the city of Benevento. It is the first bridge of the via Traiana, the road infrastructure built by the emperor
Trajan at the beginning of the 2nd century AD to connect Benevento to Brindisi, and it allowed the crossing of the
San Nicola ditch. This contribution aims to analyze the technical-constructive aspects of the building, to compare the
data with other similar structures and to frame the bridge in the topographical context connected to the ancient road
network.
