Pisa, città lagunare. Una complessa gestione delle acque dall’età romana al XV secolo
Abstract
Pisa became a strategic sea and river marshalling yard from the Mediterranean towards Florence and Lucca. The activity
of the sea currents and the slow silting of the lagoon system, caused the crisis of the port city and its definitive
decadence. In this paper some aspects regarding the Pisa port system and its cover-up, the reclamation and drainage of
agricultural land are examined. Therefore, issues related to the regimentation of water from the Roman to the Communal age are discussed.
