ENORME GESCHWINDIGKEITEN DURCH EINEN ‚KLEINEN‘ ANSTOSS ‚AUS DER FERNE‘? EINE KONJEKTUR ZU LUCR. IV 193-194
Abstract
In Lucr. I 193 the transmitted text explains the vast speed of the simulacra paradoxically
by introducing a paruola causa, which therefore seems to be corrupt. The present
article picks up Briegerʼs suggestion of an unattested *peruola (rejected by Brieger himself )
and proposes to replace paruola by peruolitanti. The second major problem of the passage is
procul in I 194, presumably a former gloss, which points towards the same – mislead – understanding
of the issue as paruola and therefore should be deleted with Christ rather than put
into perspective by adding sat with Postgate, thus moving causa into the next line which as a
result regains its former position.
