ABSTRACT - By re-examining the ancient sources, this contribution proposes a new interpretation
of the gender restrictions and sumptuary prescriptions recorded in the Lex Sacra
IG V 2, 514, whose regulatory text (III century B.C.) aimed to manage the mystery cult of the
Arkadian deity known as Despoina.
