Abstract

SVMMARIVM – De Ammiani Marcellini Rerum Gestarum Excerptis agitur in codice Vat.
Lat. 7190 servatis, manu Pomponii Laeti scriptis, necnon de consuetudine cum Ammiani
opera, quam Pomponium in extremis aetatis suae annis tantum plerique viri docti habuisse
existimant.

ABSTRACT – On the Excerpta from Ammianus Marcellinus’ Res gestae in the Vat. Lat.
7190, on their attribution to Pomponius Laetus’ hand, and on his knowledge and use of the
Res gestae during the years. In my paper I will first analyse the quotations and allusions from
Ammianus’ work in the margins of some of Pomponius’ manuscripts and in some students’
annotations dating back to his private and public teaching. Secondly, I will draw the attention
on the presence and use of the Res gestae in the 2nd book of the Romanae historiae
compendium. The results, compared with the use of the Res gestae in the Excerpta (Vat. Lat.
7190), will show that this discovery enriches our understanding of the relationship between
Pomponius and the Res gestae, which until now is mainly believed to be limited to the last
phase of Leto’ activity.
