I NOMOI DI DIOCLE E LA DIORTHOSIS DI TIMOLEONTE E CEFALO

Giuseppe Mariotta

Abstract

SVMMARIVM – Apud Diodorum XVI 82, 6 οὓς συνέγραψε Διοκλῆς scriptum invenimus.
Quapropter Dioclen Syracusanum vetustissimum legum auctorem, de quo aliunde nihil compertum
habemus, viri docti quidam finxerunt eumque ab altero Diocle popularis factionis
principe saec. V exeuntis distinguendum putaverunt. Si vero οἷς pro οὓς legimus, eorum doctorum
opinionem sequi iam non necesse videtur.

ABSTRACT – In Diod. XVI 82, 6 we find the phrase οὓς συνέγραψε Διοκλῆς, which has led
some scholars to reconstruct the figure of an archaic Syracusan lawgiver not mentioned in
other sources, Diocles, different from the homonymous demagogue who lived at the end of
the 5th century BCE. Through the proposed textual emendation of οὓς into οἷς, however, it is
probably no longer necessary to support those scholars’ opinion.
