For the Greeks, a life without pleasure was thought to be a ‘death-in-life’. This is a commonplace literary theme, which can be found in Plato’s dialogues, in Tragedy (Sophocles
and Euripides) and in Comedy (Aristophanes and other fragmentary poets).
