Affari pubblici, affari privati. Per una rilettura dell’exordium dell’orazione Sulla Pace di Isocrate alla luce dell’epitafio pericleo-tucidideo

Matteo Zaccaro

Abstract

The paper suggests that the first part of Isocrates’ On the Peace might rely
on a widespread theme of the Athenian democracy in the Classical Age, and suggests,
moreover, that Musti’s interpretation of Thuc. II 37, 2 ff. might fit for the beginning
(parr. 1-16) of Isocrates’ speech. Following this interpretation, we may conclude that
Isocrates is echoing a well-known theme of his time in order to demonstrate the important
role of the orators within the πόλις.
