La voce δραξών dell’Etymologicum Genuinum: Eratostene, Eupoli e i Baptai?

Abstract

The entry δραξών in the Etymologicum Genuinum, which mentions the name
of Eratosthenes of Cyrene (fr. 37 Strecker), discusses the meaning of the Sicilian term
δραξών and of another rare word, καψιπήδαλος. This article discusses the text of the
entry and the meaning of these two glosses. The probable context of Eratosthenes’ discussion
could be related to a Sicilian festival, the Cotytia, and to a comedy of Eupolis.
