Verdad y retórica en Tucídides

Juan Carlos Iglesis-Zoido

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to analyse how the thucydidean objective to achieve
“the search for truth” (ζήτησις τῆς ἀληθείας), as the historian points out at the end of
Archaeology, must be understood by using rhetorical and speculative procedures for a
better understanding of historical facts. This way of thinking implies the creation of a
new model of historiographical narrative which, while opposing his predecessors, also
had a decisive influence on the later historiography, making the concepts of truth and
rhetoric not antithetical but complementary.
