Aristaeus: Bacchylides fr. 45 S.-M.

Abstract


Abstract: In this article, I use intertextual and contextual evidence to analyse early
classical lyric that is indirectly transmitted. I hypothesise that, in fr. 45 S.-M., Bacchylides
fashions a catalogue of filiations for Aristaeus of Ceos stylised as a paternity
quiz. I argue that this genealogical account may have been part of Chiron.
