PITTURA FRAMMENTARIA DALLE GROTTE DI CATULLO A SIRMIONE. UNA RICOMPOSIZIONE INEDITA DI TERZO STILE
Abstract
The analysis of a group of fragments of painted plasterwork has allowed for the reconstruction of a decoration
on a white background. The main decorative element is an architectonic structure that was perhaps
originally conceived with a central focus perspective, or replicated mirror. The new recomposition is of
considerable interest as it attests to the presence of this very rare element – i.e. fantastic architecture – in the
Third Style paintings of the Cisalpine area and helps to demonstrate a full and immediate reception of urban
models for private use, albeit in contexts linked to a high social status.
