PASSATO E PROSPETTIVE FUTURE PER LE DECORAZIONI A STUCCO DI OSTIA ANTICA

Margherita Bedello Tata

Abstract

In Ostia Antica, like in Rome, the surface of some ceilings and the upper part of the walls of the tombs,
houses, buildings and thermal baths were often covered by stucco decorations. Some of these works are still
in situ: Tomb 18 of Laurentina necropolis, barrel vault of the Theater, Caseggiato del Serapide, Faro Baths.
Alternatively, other stucco fragments from the Portico delle Corporazioni, from the House of Diana, from
an unknown building and from the indeterminate site surface of the building named “Sotto il Tempio Collegiale”
were housed for a long time in inadequate storerooms. Therefore, during the last years the majority
of the stuccos were restored in situ and/or well-preserved in safer storerooms in Ostia Antica, studied and
well-documented by illustrated features and graphic reconstructions. The description of the activities promoted and held by Ostia Antica Department on this artistic production along with bibliographic references
are presented in this paper.
