IL RIUTILIZZO DELLE MURA POLIGONALI NELLE FORTIFICAZIONI DEI CENTRI DEL LAZIO MERIDIONALE NEL MEDIOEVO*

Sergio Del Ferro

Abstract

This study focuses on those sites of southern Latium characterized by medieval fortifications built reusing
and assembling ancient polygonal walls. Each one of these centers, being them ancient pre-roman and roman
towns which conserve a continuity of life, or pre-roman fortresses which present a hiatus about their
importance during the “pax romana” period, presents a reuse of the ancient polygonal walls carried out
during the central period of the Middle Ages, from the beginning of the XII to late XIV century. But all of
them are well known as fortified sites even in the Early Medieval period, thanks to a large number of written
documents and literary sources.
