DOMUS PALATINA. LE NUOVE RICERCHE DEL DIPARTIMENTO DI SCIENZE DELL’ANTICHITÀ SULLA PENDICE MERIDIONALE DEL PALATINO

Paolo Carafa, Mattia Ippoliti

Abstract

One of the most debated problems about the ancient topography of Palatine Hill, between the end of the
19th and the beginning of the 20th century, has been the location and the identification of the House of Augustus.
The excavations carried on by G. Carettoni during 1950’s in the area already investigated by P. Rosa
(around the podium of the Temple of Apollo), revealed substantial remains of what has been thought to be
this domus. Interpretation and absolute dates of the structures uncovered (and never properly published) by
Carettoni turned to be very questionable after later and more accurate stratigraphical analyses of the monumental
complex. Many questions about extension, layout and building phases of the house are still waiting
for an answer. Thanks to new research activities on the southern slope of the Palatine Hill, further analyses
of the domus Palatina of Augustus are now on going aiming at an overall comprehension and edition of the
architectural unit extended between the scalae Caci, the domus Tiberiana, the domus Flavia and the Circus
Maximus.
