DUE NUOVI EPIGRAMMI FUNERARI DELLA TRIPOLIS TESSALA*

Eleonora Santin

Abstract

This paper is the editio princeps of two funerary epigrams which can be assigned to ancient Azoros, one of
the three poleis of Tripolis, the northernmost region of Thessaly. The publication of these new documents is
part of a collaborative project based in Lyon briefly described in the introduction, whose aim is to publish
the entire epigraphic corpus of Tripolis. Based on the letter forms, both epigrams can be dated to the second
half of the 5th century BC. The two stelai on which the inscriptions are engraved are both damaged; the epigrams
are therefore incomplete (n. 1) or fragmentary (n. 2). For the first of them, we try to give a hypothesis
of textual reconstitution and for the second we try to provide an iconographic context and some parallels
with Thessalian monuments of the same period. Were the epigrams written by the same poet? This is what
we will try to find out.
