SCRITTURA E ICONOGRAFIA NELLE SETHIANORUM TABELLAE DELLA VIA APPIA

Pietro Fratini

Abstract

The so-called ‘Sethianorum Tabellae’ are an interesting group of forty-eight curse tablets from Rome of
IV-V century C.E., chiefly in Greek. They present a high-quality cursive writing, traceable back to two or
three different hands, and a rich iconographic apparatus, which represents many magic-related gods, demonic
entities, magical symbols. These curse tablets are an excellent and unique production example of such
documents in the late Roman Empire.
