L’ESPRESSIONE BRATEIS DATAS NELL’EPIGRAFIA SACRA IN LINGUA OSCA

Maria Jose Estaran Tolosa

Abstract

It is commonly accepted that the Oscan expression brateis datas corresponds to a thanksgiving action and
refers to a gift that has been given by a deity. This formula has been recorded in c. 10 cultic dedications
coming from the central Oscan speaking territory only, which can be dated between the 4th and the 2nd cent.
BCE. Judging by the epigraphic data, this formula has not been borrowed by any other similar culture. This
paper analyses in depth this expression in order to highlight its main features and to track its creation and
evolution as an epigraphic formula, paying special attention to the role played by the Greek culture.
