NEL SEGNO DI ROMA: IL COMPLESSO SANTUARIALE DEL MONTE SAN NICOLA A PIETRAVAIRANO (CE)

Gianluca Tagliamonte, Luciano Maria Rendina

Abstract

On the basis of the results of the archaeological excavations carried out by the Università del Salento at Monte San Nicola near Pietravairano (Caserta, Italy), this paper aims to highlight a number of aspects of the monumentalization process of the spectacular sanctuary complex dating to the Late-Republican era, consisting of a Tuscan temple with three cells and a theatre arranged in line on different levels. The paper will focus especially on the architectural planning, the economic and technological undertakings, and the ideological and political values related to construction of the sanctuary. This will be done particularly in relation to the cultural trends established between Latium and Campania during the period, the historical and territorial context and the local communities.
