ASPETTI DI PRAGMATICA DELLA COMUNICAZIONE IN OVIDIO: IL CASO DEI TRISTIA*

Francesca Salvatori

Abstract

This paper intends to analyse selected passages from Ovid’s Tristia (trist. 1, 1; trist. 2 and trist. 5. 2) by applying
the theories of linguistic pragmatics and pragmatics of communication; especially the politeness theories
and Grice’s four maxims of conversation. A focus on the pragmatics of the text provides a valuable insight
on the relationship between the author’s communicative intentions and the text’s messages and addressees.
Moreover, this methodology seems particularly promising when considering the political interpretation of
Ovid’s exile poetry.
