RIFLESSI DELLA ROMANIZZAZIONE NELLE NECROPOLI DELLA PIANA DI CAPESTRANO

Federica Properzio

Abstract

The research carried out since the nineteen thirties in the plain of Capestrano have evidenced a narrow
framework of funerary groups (Fossascopana/Capo d’Acqua, Fontanelle and Presciano). The archaeological
excavation brought to light about 520 graves dated between the VII century BC and the II century AC.
With regards to the local burial customs, in the period between the second half of the I century BC and the I
century DC, after the Middle-Adriatic territories were fully included in the Roman political system, a clear
discontinuity with the past can be recorded. The fossa graves, mainly ascribed to children or youth individuals,
were flanked by the built chamber tombs and cremations, that became the prevalent funerary practice
and determined a strong standardization both in the ritual and in the artifacts composition.
