LA NECROPOLI DI CAMPOVALANO, SEGNI DI CONTINUITÀ E DISCONTINUITÀ

Ilaria Di Sabatino

Abstract

The necropolis of Campovalano features an important monumentalization of the Orientalizing and Archaic
period, which seems to persist till the fifth century BC. Starting from the following century and throughout
the third century BC, the burials although with a reduced and standardized equipment, are mainly allocated
around the large mounds, revealing a desire to belong to the noble class of the previous centuries. The
continuity with tradition is also highlighted, even in the Hellenistic period, by the recurrence which granted
an adult ritual to children older than one year. Instead one year old younger children were equipped by just
a small bowl. From the 2nd century BC the funerary equipment changes, including elements for personal
care. At this time the community seems to deviate from tradition and the graves concentrate along the sepulchral
street.
