LA CONCESSIONE DELLA CITTADINANZA ROMANA AI SABINI: PROBLEMI E PROSPETTIVE DI RICERCA

Elena Tassi Scandone

Abstract

Scholars have underlined the exceptionality of the conquest of Sabina, that occurred in only one year (290 BC)
thanks to M. Curius Dentatus, and the extraordinarily short amount of time that existed between the concession
of the civitas sine suffragio and the civitas optimo iure to the inhabitants of ‘Sabina Tiberina’. This essay
would like to analyse the institutional relationships that occurred between Romani and Prisci Sabini, based on
the foedus between Romulus and Titus Tatius, and the ancient institution of the ager quaestorius that Gromatici
Veteres identify with the ager of Cures Sabini. The most accurate knowledge of the political and institutional
history of this territory, located near Rome and linked to the urbs since its beginning, could actually contribute
to set in a broader context times and ways of the concession of the civitas Romana to Prisci Sabini.
