LA VILLA COSTIERA IN LOCALITÀ CAPPELLETTO (CIVITAVECCHIA-RM)

AA. VV.

Abstract

The site of Cappelletto, north of Civitavecchia (Rome) was excavated between 2013 and 2014. The excavation
revealed the remains of a large coastal villa, characterised by various phases dating to between the 1st
century BC and the 1st century AD. The remains of a large stone staircase, found under the current beach,
which faced towards the sea, belong to the first phase. Subsequently, the entire complex underwent a radical
restructuring that led to the obliteration of the staircase in favour of the construction of a porch. Around this
structure lay a series of rooms with residential functions, characterised by floors with mosaic decorations
and plastered walls, while the service section of the villa is located in the eastern area, towards the hinterland.
In the northern area of the complex there is an apsidal room, part of the balneum, which has a different orientation
from the rest of the rooms and which may relate to first phase of the site.
