LA COSTRUZIONE DEL RACCONTO NELLE ARTI FIGURATIVE: DAI QUADRI DI III STILE AL REPERTORIO ICONOGRAFICO DELLA MEDIA E TARDA ETÀ IMPERIALE (SARCOFAGI E MOSAICI)

Francesca Ghedini, Giulia Salvo

Abstract

This paper is part of a wider branch of research which focuses on the relationships between literature and
the figurative repertoire. By using a new approach which involves applying the typical rules of the narratology
to ancient images, we attempt to understand the ways in which Roman artisans solved the problem of
depicting complex compositions. Through the examination of certain classes of material such as paintings,
mythological sarcophagi and mosaics, we analyze the different solutions adopted by the artisans to represent
a series of mythological events, with the aim of reconstructing the creation of complex iconographies
in the Roman age.
