DESINAT HINC BELLATOR ATROX, IAM DESINAT HOSTIS: LA GUERRA A LEOPOLI-CENCELLE IN EPOCA MEDIEVALE

Abstract

Since its foundation in the middle of the ninth century the city of Leopoli-Cencelle has always been
characterized by its military nature. Founded as a shelter for the population of the roman city of Centumcellae,
it is an outstanding example of one of the few early-medieval foundations in the Latium area and has been
endowed with walls since its beginnings. This contribution aims to provide an overview of the militaristic
aspects of Cencelle (9th-15th century): the original settlement and architectural choice of “passive defense”;
the archaeological evidence for war-arms and armor; the historical and archaeological reconstruction of
wartime scenarios.
