AA. VV.

Abstract

Since 2006, the Italian Archaeological Mission in Iraqi Kurdistan (MAIKI) has been active in various areas
of the autonomous Kurdish Region of Iraq and at the archaeological site of Paikuli (ca. 100 km south-east
of Sulaimaniyah and currently between the provincial districts of Darbandikhan and Kalar). Throughout
2019, MAIKI conducted a wide range of activities focusing on the study, conservation and enhancement
of the monumental complex built by the Sasanian king Narseh (297-302 CE). In close collaboration with
the Kurdish institutions, these interventions were carried out both on the site of Paikuli, where an intense
archaeological campaign took place, and at the Slemani Museum. Within the framework of the latter activity,
the comprehensive cataloguing of the blocks belonging to the Slemani Collection and the simultaneous
updating of the associated documentation was carried out. As a result of these preliminary investigations, it
has been possible to inaugurate a new museum gallery for the display of the Paikuli material.
