IL COMPIUTO E L’INCOMPIUTO NELLE ISCRIZIONI EDILIZIE GRECHE D’ETÀ CLASSICA: QUESTIONI DI METODO*

Giovanni Marginesu

Abstract

Starting from a systematic examination of inscriptions on classical buildings, this study attempts to explain
the importance of concluding projects by examining the building policy of the polis. In general terms, economic,
managerial and technical difficulties made it difficult to complete the most ambitious programs. The
completion of construction works within the terms of delivery was proof of excellent management. On the
other hand, failure to deliver projects on time could create trouble for the various figures involved in the
process, from epistatai and other magistrates to architects and workmen.
