L’UTILIZZO DEI TESSUTI NEL RITUALE FUNERARIO: LA TOMBA 172 DI MOZIA

Nina Ferrante, Laura Medeghini, Francesco Mura

Abstract

The funerary textiles in the Phoenician and Punic world are small due to the perishable nature of the fibres
in archaeological contexts and the lack of attention shown until a few years ago for this type of investigation.
Currently there are many possibilities offered by new technologies applicable to the textile sector that allow
investigating fabrics in a more specific way. The new methodological approaches, in addition to providing
valuable information on the types of textiles used in funeral rites, allow us to understand the social and economic
significance of these products.
The paper reports the results of the analyses conducted on the textile preserved on a knife found in Motya
and the contributions that new technologies can make to the study of textile production and funeral rites in
the ancient world.
