Abstract

MiSAK, the Italian Historical and Archaeological Mission in Kurdistan, has signed in December 2021 a
three-year renewable agreement with the KRG General Directorate of Antiquities and the Garmian Antiquities
Directorate to carry out an archaeological project concerning the historical and archaeological study,
protection, and enhancement of the Sarqala archaeological site (KRG, Iraq). This site includes a possible
necropolis of the Parthian period and the Qalla Kon tell, a probable multi-phase site, possibly part of the
settlement connected with the nearby necropolis.
The MiSAK project for Sarqala envisages flanking the historical and archaeological study activities, some of
which are already in progress, with site preservation and enhancement actions and public archaeology initiatives
aimed at raising the awareness of the local population and turning them into one of the main actors
in safeguarding and enhancing actions.
