UN RILIEVO MARMOREO INEDITO DALLA REGIO I DI POMPEI

Alessandro Gallo

Abstract

Th is article puts forward some interpretive hypotheses regarding an unpublished relief from a small domus in Regio I. It is a slab of marble, probably
Greek, formed of two joining fragments, and originally had a votive function. It was reused, probably for ornamental purposes, by carving
on its back two individuals facing one another. While not uni que at Pompeii, this specimen stands out for its particularly rough craftsmanship
and the probable mythological implications of the scene.
Keywords: relief, snake, symbol, Triptolemus, Demeter.
