I Propilei del Foro Triangolare di Pompei nelle vedute del XIX secolo

Domenico Russo

Abstract

From the middle of the XVIIIth century, the finding of the cities buried by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 A. D. aroused extraordinary
wonder and interest all over Europe. As a result, a huge quantity of studies and paintings were produced, whose subjects were
the ruins of the Vesuvian excavated cities. These paintings, in addition to their antiquarian value and according to their peculiarities,
can sometimes play an important role in reconstructing what the buildings looked like when they were unearthed. Also small constructions,
only seemingly less important, can be examined from this point of view.
