La decorazione architettonica in pietra di Pompei preromana e romana attraverso l’analisi di alcuni capitelli dai Granai del Foro

Valerio Bruni

Abstract

The great importance that Pompeii holds for the study of daily life in ancient cities has overshadowed other fields of study and in
particular the one concerning the architectural decoration. This contribution aims indeed to recover the analysis of Pompeian architectural
decoration from the starting point of the catalogue of some capitals contained in the “Granai del Foro” warehouse. The
presence of elements belonging to the entire constructive history of the city has allowed in fact to trace the architectural landscape
of Pompeii and infer the references and models that played an important role in the development of a local language. The article
captures that transitional moment between influences from Graecia and Magna Graecia in the Hellenistic period and the introduction
of decorative types codified in Rome during the Augustan age.
