in tutta Europa. Frutto di ciò fu un’immensa quantità di studi ed un’ampia produzione di immagini aventi per oggetto le rovine delle città vesuviane
riportate alla luce. Tali raffi gurazioni, oltre al valore antiquario, in considerazione delle loro peculiarità, possono, in alcuni casi, ricoprire un ruolo
importante allo scopo di risalire all’aspetto che gli edifi ci possedevano quando furono rinvenuti. Anche edifi ci di piccole dimensioni, solo apparentemente
meno importanti, possono essere esaminati sotto questo aspetto.

From the half of the XVIIIth century, the fi nding of the cities buried by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 A. D. aroused extraordinary wonder
and interest all over Europe. As a result, a huge quantity of studies and paintings were produced, whose subjects were the ruins of the Vesuvian
excavated cities. Th ese paintings, in addition to their antiquarian value and according to their peculiarities, can sometimes play an important
role in reconstructing what the buildings looked like when they were unearthed. Also small buildings, only seemingly less important, can be
examined from this point of view.
