Per una storia del restauro musivo: Il caso emblematico del Cave canem tra evidenze materiali e fonti documentali

Ernesto De Carolis, Francesco Esposito, Diego Ferrara

Abstract

On March 2, 1825, the mosaic of the Cave canem was discovered in the House of the Tragic Poet in Pompeii. In 1829 it was removed and
included in the collections of the Royal Museum in Naples. In 1899, after various conservation-related vicissitudes, Antonio Sogliano put the
mosaic back in situ. Th e work thus became an emblematic and intriguing case in a possible history of mosaic restoration in the Vesuvian area,
based on material evidence and documentary sources.
