LA VILLA ‘DEL CAVALCAVIA DI SALONE’ ALIAS ‘VILLA DEL GIURISTA’: IL CONTESTO ARCHEOLOGICO*

Claudia Angelelli

Abstract

During the year 2013, in relation to the project for enlargement of A24 motorway, extensive excavations were conducted in
the site called ‘Cavalcavia’ di Salone, situated in the eastern suburb of Rome. Archaeological investigation allowed to discover a settlement risen towards the middle of the 2th century BC, born as a farm and then transformed (about in the middle of the 1th century BC) in a villa, built on terraces and decorated with mosaics and frescoes. The occupation of the site is probably related with exploitation of red-tuff quarries (cave di Salone) located north and just outside of the villa.
