Forme medievali nella riflessione e nell’opera di Gustavo Giovannoni
Abstract
In the present contribution we intend to investigate Gustavo Giovannoni’s cultural position with respect to the attention he
paid to the medieval age. In fact, this interest of his, is made explicit both in his numerous writings (volumes, reports, speeches
at conferences, etc.), and in specific architectural solutions which can be witnessed in completed works and design ideas.
~e influence of the typical characters of the medieval age emerges at different scales of intervention: in the conception of new
neighborhoods, where aggregations of different typologies and circulation patterns are hypothesized in a “moved and varied
clustering... following a picturesque aesthetic [...] reconnecting to the medieval tradition”; and in the definition of particular architectural
solutions implemented in villas, churches, tombs, etc.
Notably noteworthy in his writings is the explicit appreciation of Italian Romanesque, considered as an influential reference
“for a new and worthy architecture of the churches” of his time.
Keywords : Gustavo Giovannoni, italian romanesque, ecclesiastical architecture, Twentieth Century.
