Il Ponte di Bassano. Storia, ricostruzioni e restauro

Giovanni Carbonara

Abstract

The Ponte degli Alpini (Bridge of the Alpines) in Bassano del Grappa, traditionally attributed to Andrea Palladio, represents a
case of historical and interpretive ambiguity, questioning the assignment of the work to the Vicentine architect. Although Palladio
played a role in the design and supervision of the bridge, recent research and historical documents suggest that the original
design is the result of successive modifications and continuous interventions over the centuries. If you look closely at the bridge’s
structure, from when it was built in the 1600s to when it was changed in the 1900s and more recently, you can see how its
identity is shaped by different layers of collective, civil, and cultural memories.
