Il palazzo di Bonifacio VIII e l’annessa struttura conventuale: un esempio di architettura civile tardo medievale. Dalle fonti documentali alle indagini strumentali
Abstract
The structure of the palace, whose construction began in the first half of the 13th century at the behest of Pope Gregory IX,
originated from a significant architectural transformation, with a construction process that concluded only in the 15th century.
The complex, consisting of the palace and the convent with the small church, constitutes an imposing structure that characterizes
the access point to the district of Castellum. The Papal Palace represents an uncommon case of late medieval civil architecture
and, due to its integrity, is a particularly rare and useful example for the reading and understanding of construction techniques,
individual architectural features, and decorative interventions. A careful examination of the historical layers, conducted
through direct and indirect investigations, reveals an interesting and complex genesis. While sector studies have uncovered new
or supplementary interpretative elements, a new campaign for comprehensive metric and diagnostic-instrumental surveying is
nearing completion, which for the first time has also been used to analyze the internal masonry.
