Palazzi comunali, processi formativi dell’architettura e dinamiche istituzionali in area subalpina occidentale
Abstract
The paper outlines the methodological aspects and comparative outcomes of an interdisciplinary research project developed within
a cross-border institutional framework, focusing on the value of municipal seats. It discusses cases from southwestern Piedmont,
emphasizing the relationships between urban and architectural choices in ancient episcopal cities (Asti, Alba, Turin), dynastic seats
of territorial princedoms (Pinerolo, Saluzzo), and lively new towns of both communal and seigniorial foundation (Cuneo, Mondovì,
Cherasco, Savigliano, Moncalieri). Launched in 2016, the research project aims to construct a digital atlas of communal
power spaces, both in well-known areas with a deeply rooted communal culture and in seemingly more peripheral areas.
Keywords : Communal architecture, communal palaces, medieval city, new towns, territorial princedoms.
