Ombre di dispotismo orientale sul principato

Antonella Ruberto

Abstract

This study focuses on the uses of Xerxes’ image about Caligula et Nero. Sometimes, the two
principes are compared to the Persian King by ancient authors, and there are also very
interesting allusions to Xerxes in sources dating back to the Neronian age. These uses testify
the strong sense of uneasiness towards the power of the princeps, because, at the time of
Caligula and Nero, it appared to be more and more similar to the power of the Eastern despot
par excellence, Xerxes.

Key-words: Xerxes, Caligula, Nero, princeps’ power, oriental dispotism.
