CADMO DI COS. UNO O DUE TIRANNI CON LO STESSO NOME ?

Lorenzo Braccesi

Abstract

Cadmo of Cos. One or two tyrants with the same name?
This contribution suggests that two tyrants, father and son, answering to the same
name of Cadmus, succeeded each other in Cos within a decade. Both were involved in
clashes against Artemisia, in both cases she was the guarantor of the Persica pax. The defeat
of the first would have allowed the lady of Halicarnassus to extend her rule over Cos and
the surrounding archipelago; the defeat of the latter would have enabled her to chastise who
had refused to join Xerxes’ expedition. Both, moreover, would have emigrated to Sicily in
the run-up to the First and Second Persian Wars, respectively.
